Oasis is a British rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. The group was founded by Liam Gallagher (vocals, tambourine), Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs (guitar), Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan (bass guitar) and Tony McCarroll (drums, percussion).
Oasis signed to independent record label Creation Records in 1993 and released their record-setting debut album Definitely Maybe. After a string of successful singles, the band’s sophomore effort (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? became one of the best-selling albums of all time. They experienced international success and fame throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. By 2009, the band had sold over 70 million records worldwide.
Their’ final studio album, Dig Out Your Soul, was released in October 2008. On August 28, 2009, following an on-stage altercation between the Gallagher brothers at a concert in Paris; Noel announced his departure from the band and subsequently formed Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
Liam Gallagher will continue to tour and release music under the Oasis name. Until he legally obtains the rights to the name.
Liam has commented that he hopes Oasis will reunion “for the people”. Liam has said he is not interested in a personal reunion with his brother.
In 2010, NME named Oasis the greatest British band of all time. In 2017, a poll of over 100 music critics by Long Live Vinyl voted Oasis as having the fifth-greatest album of all time with (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?. The same publication placed them at number sixteen on their list of the fifty best bands of all time.
Whether Oasis are overrated or not is up for debate, one thing is for sure – they have left a lasting impression on the music industry and their fans around the world. A lot of bands have cited Oasis as an influence or inspiration, you may know some of these bands; Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Maroon 5, and Cold Play.
Are Oasis overrated? It’s hard to say. They definitely had a strong impact on the Britpop scene of the 1990s and early 2000s. However, they only had one hit single in Australia (“Wonderwall”), so it’s possible that their popularity here is not as strong as it is in other parts of the world. In Australia, Wonderwall peaked at number 1. Dont look back in anger peaked at 19, and Champaign Supernova peaked at 26.
Of their 30 Singles released in Australia, they have had 9 Top 40 Songs, 3 peaking in the top 20, and only 1 in the top 10.
Ultimately, it comes down to personal opinion. Some people love Oasis, while others think they’re overrated. What do you think? As always Like, Love, Share and Follow!
