Hey PopRockers, buckle up! Tones and I are lighting up Australia with her Beautifully Ordinary Tour, and I had the privilege of catching her first of two shows at the iconic Fremantle Arts Centre. Under the threat of rain and gusty winds, I armed myself with a poncho and ventured out, admittedly unsure of what to expect. While I knew some of Tones’ hits, I wasn’t familiar with her full catalogue. With the weather forecast looking grim, I couldn’t help but wonder: Would standing in the rain be worth it for songs I might not even know?
Spoiler alert: It absolutely was. By the end of the night, I wasn’t just a casual listener—I was a full-blown fan. Tones and I put on a show that transformed the Fremantle Arts Centre into a haven of pure musical magic, converting sceptics and pleasing long-time devotees alike.
The crowd was a mix of young girls, mothers, families, and die-hard fans, all braving the elements for a night that promised to be unforgettable. And when the show kicked off, it was clear that Tones had every intention of delivering on that promise.
The opening salvo of “Figured It Out,” “Cloudy Day,” and “I Get High” was an explosion of energy, setting the tone for a night that would see the Fremantle Arts Centre become a swirling, euphoric mass of 6,000 bodies moving to the beat. These may not have been the chart-toppers everyone expected, but that didn’t matter. The atmosphere was electric, with Tones and her band creating a sonic landscape that made it impossible not to be swept up in the moment. From the very beginning, it was clear this wasn’t just a concert; it was an experience.
One of the highlights of the night was the transition into “Never Seen the Rain,” a track made all the more poignant by the actual rain that sporadically showered the crowd throughout the evening. As if on cue, the weather added its own touch to the performance, but not in a way that dampened spirits. Instead, it became part of the show, a reminder of Tones and I’s ability to connect with her audience on a deeply human level.
Next up was “Wonderful,” followed by an unforgettable cover of Alphaville’s “Forever Young.” Now, we’ve all heard this song covered countless times, but Tones and I’s version? It was something special—equal parts nostalgic and fresh, paying homage to the original while infusing it with her unique style. The crowd was entranced, swaying along in a moment that felt like it could stretch on forever.
Throughout the show, Tones and I’s choir, dancers, and band were nothing short of phenomenal. Every song was its own mini-performance, with elaborate lighting and visuals that transformed the stage into a dynamic, living entity. It was the kind of production that could have easily filled a stadium, and yet it felt intimate, as though we were all part of something bigger than ourselves.
The next segment of the set was a whirlwind, featuring tracks like “We’ll See Stars,” “You Don’t Know Me Like That,” “Dreaming,” “Won’t Sleep,” “Bad Child,” and the fan-favourite “Ur So F**kinG cOoL.” Time seemed to fly by as the audience lost themselves in the music, dancing and singing along without a care in the world. The energy in the venue was palpable, a testament to Tones’ ability to not only captivate but also elevate the crowd.
One of the most unexpected moments of the night came when Tones and I introduced a bonus track, “I Made It,” which hadn’t been part of the original setlist. This addition, requested by a fan, was a triumphant anthem of resilience—a perfect message for anyone who has ever faced adversity. The song fit seamlessly into the set, adding an extra layer of depth and emotion to an already powerful performance.
Another standout was the acoustic rendition of “Sorrento,” a touching tribute that showcased Tones and I’s versatility as an artist. It was a moment of vulnerability, drawing the audience in and painting a vivid picture with her words. This was followed by another acoustic gem, “Lose Someone Like Me,” which transitioned beautifully into the choir-only track “Lonely.” These quieter moments were a stark contrast to the high-energy numbers that had come before, but they were no less impactful. They served to highlight the breadth of Tones and I’s talent, proving that she’s not just a pop sensation but a true artist in every sense of the word.
As the night progressed, Tones and I continued to weave between genres and styles with ease. The next trio of songs—“I Am Free,” “Johnny Run Away,” and a stunning cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You”—only further cemented her status as a musical chameleon. “Johnny Run Away” in particular was a standout, a track that demands your attention with its poignant lyrics. If you haven’t heard it yet, do yourself a favour and give it a listen.
One of the more dramatic moments of the night came during “The Kids Are Coming,” when a medical emergency in the crowd briefly interrupted the show. Tones and I handled the situation with grace and professionalism, ensuring that the person in need received the necessary attention while keeping the rest of the audience informed and calm. Once the situation was under control, the show resumed and “The Kids are Coming” restarted. It was a testament to her ability to command the stage and the respect she has for her fans.
As the show neared its end, Tones and I couldn’t resist engaging with the crowd, her down-to-earth nature shining through in her candid banter. She was visibly moved by the turnout and the energy of the audience, expressing her gratitude in a way that felt genuine and heartfelt. But as all good things must come to an end, she reminded us that the show was almost over, much to the disappointment of the crowd.
The penultimate track, “Dance With Me,” was followed by the song that catapulted Tones and I to international fame—“Dance Monkey.” It was clear that this was the moment everyone had been waiting for. The performance was electric, a fitting finale to a night that had been full of surprises and unforgettable moments. Or so we thought.
As the lights dimmed and people began to make their way toward the exits, something unexpected happened. The screen flickered to life, revealing Tones and I on a TV, apologizing for forgetting her favourite song. The crowd that had started to leave quickly turned around and rushed back to the stage, eager for one last dance. And with that, the band launched into “Fly Away,” a perfect closer to an incredible show. It was a moment of pure joy, with the audience singing along, lost in the music one final time.
As the night finally came to a close, Tones and I took a moment to introduce every member of her band, choir, and dance crew, giving credit to each person. It was a classy touch to an already impeccable performance, reminding us that while Tones and I may be the star, she’s also part of a larger collective of talent that helped make the night so special.
And with that, it was time to head home, but not without the promise of more to come. For those lucky enough to have tickets to the second show or any of the upcoming dates on the Beautifully Ordinary Tour, you’re in for an absolute treat. Tones and I have proven that she’s much more than just a viral sensation—she’s a force to be reckoned with, a true artist who knows how to put on a show that leaves you buzzing long after the final note has faded.
This tour isn’t just about music; it’s about creating a shared experience, a moment in time where we can all come together, forget our worries and lose ourselves in the magic of live performance. So, if you get the chance, don’t hesitate—grab your tickets, grab your poncho if need be, and prepare to be blown away by Tones and I’s Beautifully Ordinary Tour. Trust me, it’s worth every second.
