Australian singer-songwriter Yorke, born Grace Hughes in Byron Bay, has unveiled her latest single, “i wanna hate you,” marking her first release of 2025. The track delves into the complexities of evolving friendships and the emotional turbulence that accompanies them.
Co-written with Josef Page and Saint Raymond during her inaugural writing trip to London, “i wanna hate you” showcases Yorke’s continued exploration of electronic pop. The song features subdued verses that build into a dynamic, synth-laden chorus. It addresses the dissolution of a platonic relationship, capturing the bitterness and confusion of growing apart:
“That’s cool you said forever then you closed the chapter / That’s what you do best / So add me to the list of your so-called disasters.”
Reflecting on the inspiration behind the song, Yorke shared, “I’d started to have a bit of a grudge and hold the other person accountable, just because they weren’t growing in the same direction as me. It’s not anyone’s fault, just the reality of growing up, but I was having a really hard time adjusting to losing the version of them that I could relate to.”
Accompanying the single is a music video directed by Kyle Caulfield, known for his work with artists like G Flip and Peach PRC. The video continues the narrative from Yorke’s previous release, “love on the run,” featuring dual versions of Yorke—one embodying a ‘good’ persona and the other a ‘bad’ one. This installment offers a perspective from the ‘bad’ Yorke, set against a surreal, supervillain backdrop.
Caulfield elaborated on the concept: “This video leans into this camp/fun intertwining story where we get to watch Yorke in this surreal supervillain landscape. It was a way for us to explore the themes and concepts behind the music and have Yorke play two characters that define the ‘duality of woman’.”
“i wanna hate you” follows Yorke’s recent “Young In Love” tour across regional Australia, where she supported Kita Alexander. The single builds upon the momentum from her October release, “love on the run,” signaling a promising trajectory for Yorke in 2025.
