You might remember Icehouse from the ’80s and ’90s, but like most things from that era, they are making a comeback. Well, Icehouse has never really gone anywhere. Icehouse is still relevant and embedded in Australiana. So much so that local celebrations are not complete until someone plays Great Southern Land, our other Anthem.

Flowers

Before Icehouse, the band from Sydney was known as the “Flowers”. Iva Davies formed the band with bass Player Keith Welsh in 1977. Keyboardist Michael Hostie and Down Brown rounded out the band. Together they built up a following around the pub circuit playing covers of other bands of that time.

After a few shuffles in the band lineup, They released their debut single in 1980 “Can’t Help Myself”

Their last performance as the Flowers was in 1981 at the Capitol Theatre, when they officially became “Icehouse”. Flowers had to change their name, to avoid confusion with the Scottish band “The Flowers”.

Icehouse

Icehouse had a total of 8 Studio albums, spawning 18 hits to peak in the top 40. The only song to reach number 1 in Australia is Electric Blue! Great Southern Land, Icehouse’s most undoubtedly most known song peaked at number 5. You might remember in 1988 Yahoo Serious film Young Einstien? Great Southern Land is featured in the film.

Of the 7 albums released, Man of Colours peaked at number one on the album chart, being 7x Platinum. With no less than 5 top 40 Tracks. It’s been a few years since Icehouse released a full studio album, however, they still continue to tour and perform.

Apart from the Music and movie soundtracks, Iva davies is also known for one other really huge Australian Thing. That’s the mullet, well nowadays the mullet has given way to the distinguished silver short hair, but you gotta admire his mullet, they just don t grow them like that anymore.

We hope you enjoyed finding out a bit bout Icehouse, the flowers and Iva Davies. A true Australian Icon. As always Like, Love, Share and follow. Until next time stay safe.
