The 80s were a great time to be alive. We were blessed with big hair, blockbuster movies, computers, and the rise of MTV. This laid the path of fame for many iconic artists, such as an extraordinary woman of rock, Pat Benatar.
With five platinum albums, 15 Billboard top 40 singles, and 35 million sold albums worldwide. Pat Benatar is one of the leading women of the New Wave Sound. Her raw and pure mainstream rock makes her the pop idol that she is.
Pat is a US singer and four-time Grammy Award winner who charted in the 1980s. Having superhits like “Love Is a Battlefield” (1983) and “We Belong” (1984).
Born on January 10, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, Benatar found her interest in music and vocals quite early. At the age of 20, she performed in LA’s teeming nightclubs and formed a duo with pianist Phil Coxon. Who produced her first single, “Day Gig“. After featuring the New York City’s Tramps nightclub during four rock concerts in 1978, she was signed to Chrysalis Records.
Her first album, “In The Heat Of The Night“, brought hits like “Heartbreaker” and “We Live For Love” to life and eventually propelled it to the top 12 most listened albums in 1980. While in Australia the album only reached number 25, the Canadians went crazy for it, honouring it with four Platinum.
But that’s not all, as Pat Benatar’s career was just about to reach its peak. With her arena-rock-like themes and rhythmic compositions of guitar and heavy bass, she dropped her second album, “Crimes of Passion“, a true breakthrough in the US. It peaked for five consecutive weeks at number 2, right behind John Lennon’s Double Fantasy. Her most celebrated single, “Hit me with your best shot”, was a steadfast rock hymn and won gold status right after breaking into the US Top 10.
With her second album, she won her first Grammy Award for “Best Female Rock Vocal Performance” in 1980. This made her the most famous woman of rock of her time.
There’s no question, that tracks “Shadows Of The Night” and “Love Is A Battlefield” founded Benatar’s reputation as a superstar. Even though her last releases were not as impacting on the world of rock. These albums gained her eighth consecutive Platinum-certified album in Canada.
By the cap of the Millennium, Pat Benatar was well-known for the true rock legend she was. And Her unstoppable enthusiasm for the art of music led her to create another three albums, such as “True Love“, “Gravity’s Rainbow”, and “Go“. She was accompanied by great idols on her tours, such as Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, and her husband Neil Giraldo, a renowned songwriter and producer.
Recently, the woman of rock was nominated for the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With four Grammys in her pockets and her arms full of platinum records, we find Benatar as one of the most cherished and memorable rock legends of all time. Because her last hits connect back to 2017, we still see this nostalgic spark in us whenever hits like “Love Is a Battlefield” or “Heartbreaker” find their way into our radios.
AS always we hope you enjoyed our latest Woman of Rock! don’t forget to like love and share!
