The Dreggs are currently doing a huge National Tour, and taking in New Zealand as well, belting our banger after banger from their debut album ‘Caught In A Reverie’.

If you don’t know the Dreggs, there’s no better time to introduce you. We spoke with Paddy Macrae about a month ago, you can watch the video below.

The Dreggs are a folk band formed by Paddy Macrae and Zane Harris from Bribie Island on the Sunshine Coast. Coming together and producing great tracks, which has led to their debut album and huge tour.

Metro City Perth

I was lucky enough to be invited along to The Dreggs, performing at Metro City in Perth (Northbridge). The Lads rocked up right on time, with a loud welcoming of Perth’s finest crowd.

The Dreggs let Perth know they were here from the very first track, “For Your Love”, and from that moment onwards, the lads had the crowd eating from their hands.

The set was scheduled to go from 9.30 pm to 10.45 but did go a little over, much to the delight of the crowd, but, we had so much fun, it felt like we were only there for a few minutes, the time just disappeared.

During the Show, Paddy took the time to explain that it had taken about three years to release their first album, and they wanted an album that showed every human emotion, and, it’s ok to have and show these emotions. This is something the crowd could embrace and share. Essentially the show followed these emotions, just like the album does, from track One to Twelve..

The venue was packed, with every vantage point taken and a full dance floor, the crowd was a mix of young and old who weren’t afraid to sing back at the top of their lungs. What’s a show by ‘The Dreggs’ without a sing-along?

The Dreggs came out and opened with “For Your Love”, followed by ‘Places’ and ‘Train Left the Station’. They continued rocking the crowd with ‘All My Friends’ and ‘Berlin”. The show went up a notch with ‘Look To The Stars’, then a quick message from Paddy, before introducing ‘Sad Old Song’.

The Dreggs – Halfway

This was about the halfway mark of the show, and The Dreggs included a couple of tracks that didn’t make the album. ‘Keepsake’ and “Madeline’. Then it was back to the album tracks, with the storytelling of ‘I’m a Litlle Older’ and the disarming ‘Peeps with The Goods’. The latter of those two tracks was heavily influenced by Matt Corby.

Another track that didn’t make the album, ‘Give Myself To You’ led to ‘She Picks Flowers’.

Rounding out the night were two absolute bangers, ‘Gold’ and ‘Take A Little Time’. Paddy had a little bit of fun, getting the crowd to chant one more song, before finishing the night on ‘Take A Little Time”.

Expectations Vs Reality

Coming into the show, I didn’t know what to expect, I had heard a handful of their songs, and I was concerned, I wasn’t going to have a good time. However 30 seconds into the show and man, was I impressed, Paddy and Zane compliment each other, a perfect match just like the Pierce Brothers, you can read our review of them here.

It’s like this style of folk music could easily outpace the growth of Country music in Australia, and it could be led by bands like The Dreggs, especially if the shows were as good as the one we just witnessed.

10 outta 10, Awesome show, it’s a must-see for all music lovers.
