The Script kicked off their set with a captivating drum track that instantly pulled the audience in. You know it’s going to be a great show when you feel the music in your bones. I’d mentioned in my review of “A Day on the Green” in Perth how crisp the sound system was, and let me tell you, this concert was no different—everything was perfectly dialled in.
The opening was jaw-dropping, with the band members appearing almost like they materialized from thin air. The Script, an Irish rock band known for their heartfelt lyrics, epic melodies, and a mix of pop, rock, and R&B influences, made their grand entrance. Formed in Dublin in 2001, the band includes lead vocalist and keyboardist Danny O’Donoghue, guitarist Ben Weaver, Benjamin Sargent on Bass, and drummer Glen Power.
They dove right into “You Won’t Feel a Thing,” followed by the anthemic “Superheroes” and the emotional “Rain.” When “Rain” hit, the crowd was encouraged to sing along, but only the most devoted Script fans sung along at first. As the night went on, though, the crowd warmed up, and you could feel the energy shift as even the more reserved fans started to belt out the lyrics.
After “Both Ways,” Danny took a moment to introduce the band, then kept the vibe going with “6 Degrees of Separation” and “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved.” And when “The Last Time” began, the whole crowd became one—arms swaying side to side, a collective wave of pure energy.
The mood turned more reflective as the band paid tribute to Mark Sheehan, their beloved guitarist who tragically passed away in 2023. It was a solemn, heartfelt moment that truly hit home for everyone in the crowd. But it wasn’t long before they were back in the vibe of the show with “Inside Out” and “Before the Worst,” lifting everyone’s spirits again.
Then came “Nothing,” and that’s when the real magic happened. Danny made his way through the crowd, and suddenly, the entire back section surged forward, hoping for a wave, a high-five, or just a closer glimpse of the man himself. The energy was electric.
“Paint the Town Green” was a celebration of Irish pride. I swear, every Irish person in Australia showed up for this show. Fans were doing little jigs, and I’m pretty sure I saw some Riverdance moves mixed in—true Irish spirit was alive and well.
As The Script closed the main set with “For the First Time,” Danny walked offstage, singing the last words, but the crowd kept the song alive. The chants kept going, and eventually, the lads from Dublin couldn’t resist coming back for an encore that had the whole place buzzing.
The encore opened with “Home Is Where the Hurt Is,” setting a tender tone that led right into a powerhouse performance of “Break Even.” Danny brought Calum Scott on stage to join him for the duet, and the crowd was absolutely lit. The energy was off the charts, with everyone singing their hearts out.
To cap off the Australian leg of their tour, they blasted through “Hall of Fame”—an epic way to end the night. It was the perfect finale, but I’m sure there were plenty in the crowd who didn’t want it to end. Still, as all great shows do, it came to a close—though with a promise from the band that they’ll be back.
The lads from Dublin really gave it everything they had. The venue, the opening acts, and, of course, The Script’s performance were all spot-on. It was a night filled with heart, energy, and unforgettable moments—one that left the crowd craving more.
