Hootie & The Blowfish story begins in 1986 in Columbia, South Carolina. Darius Rucker, the soulful voice behind the band, met Mark Bryan in their freshman year at the University of South Carolina. Their friendship kicked off when Mark overheard Darius singing in the dormitory showers. A shared passion for music brought them together, and they soon started jamming and performing.
Mark and Darius later joined forces with Dean Felber, a fellow student and talented bassist, and Brantley Smith, their original drummer. The name “Hootie & The Blowfish” came about in a quirky way. It was inspired by two friends of theirs: one nicknamed “Hootie” because of his owl-like glasses and the other “Blowfish” due to his puffed-up demeanour. The unique name intrigued fans and set the stage for their distinctive journey in music.
