Hey Poprockers in a previous life, I was a DJ in clubs and pubs, and without bragging I was pretty good, so what I am about to tell you can be taken as the “God’s Honest Truth” and we all know God was a DJ. So I guess that makes Jolyon a disciple at the least.

No matter how good you are, one of the hardest jobs in DJ’ing is being the starting DJ. You have the responsibility of taking a raw crowd and no atmosphere, to a stage where the crowd is pumped and ready for the next act. In clubs, it’s generally the next DJ.

The role of the first DJ is to set up the night, so the next DJ looks good, and they have an easier job keeping the crowd going.

What’s even harder, is when you are opening for a band. Why? Because when a band plays, the crowd is there for the band and not you. When the support band is a DJ, the crowd doesn’t know what to expect, so the expectations are set high by the crowd, and what’s worse, the crowd hasn’t had enough time to have a drink to loosen those inhibitions.

Enter Jolyon Petch.

If you don’t know Jolyon, let me do a quick Intro, he is an Australia-based DJ / Producer, and Jolyon is originally from New Zealand. You may know his remix of Dreams, just one of his remixes to hit number 1 on the Australian Club Chart, as of writing he has 11 Number 1’s and 29 in the top 10.

With Sheppard

Currently, Jolyon is opening for Sheppard on their Zora Album Tour. Jolyon is treating the crowd to a great range of dance tracks, with original remixes of his own creations from throughout his career. I am pretty sure I heard You Can Call Me Al, His hit Dreams, and his most recent remix of Sunshine with no other than Sheppard. It was while Jolyon played this new track that Sheppard joined him on stage. The crowd loved that little surprise.

We were there to do a review of Sheppard, which you can read here, but it would be wrong of us not to do a spiel about Jolyon, It’s always a hard job to open for anyone, but opening for one of Australia’s premier Pop Bands is a challenge all of its own, especially in Perth on a Tuesday night.

Jolyon on Stage

Jolyon didn’t just do a great job, he smashed it out of the park, even if the crowd didn’t fully understand the level of greatness that was performing for them. We did, and I even managed to bump into Jolyon after his set, not only is he a great DJ / Producer, but he was also a great guy, and pretty humble for a performer of his level.

If you get a chance to see Jolyon at any venue or opening for another great band, make sure you get there, fist-pump the air and bounce like crazy. Sing along and have a bloody great night, like we did!

As an old DJ who judges other DJs pretty harshly, I can say Jolyon, inspired me to break out the decks and get that fire going again in the belly. Jolyon is a great performer, great on the mic, and is 10/10. Thank You Jolyon!
