Hey PopRockers, Grinspoon are coming to the end of their huge 45-show tour across Australia, and once again we were front and centre at their Perth Show at the Astor Theatre.

Australians are quick to mention the likes of Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel, Doc Neeson and The Angels, as Australian rock superstars. Still, we are quick to forget that over the last quarter of a century, yeah it’s been that long. Here in Australia, we have been building a collection of superstars, Including the lads from Lismore. GRINSPOON.

Read Grinspoon Easy Detention here

We last saw Grinners during the Easy Detention Tour, and since then they released a new album the first in 12 years. Whatever Whenever.

Press Club

To open the night Press Club warmed up the crowd with a great set. Press Club are a punk band from Melbourne, they released their first music in 2017 and are releasing new music within the next week.

Press Club are Natalie Foster, Greg Rietwyk, Iain Macrae, and Frank Lees.

Make sure you check them out and share some love!

Grinspoon

Back to Grinners. The Lads from Lismore, Pat Davern (Guitar), Joe Hanson (Bass), Kristian Hopes (Drums), and Phil Jamieson (Lead Vocals), hit the stage and set the Astor Theatre alight!

Here at PopRock, we do our best not to add comments about the venue or the patrons, unless we really have to. So to start our review we are going to hit up the negatives, the crowd was generally well-behaved except for two incidents.

The first a punter, came charging into the venue and into the crowd, we are not sure what he did, but it took an army of security guards, to get him out of the crowd and venue.

While security attended to that, Phil during his favourite track, stopped the band and had to get security, to attend to people fighting in the crowd, apparently, some guy thought it was ok to fight with a woman.

PopRockers it’s never ok to do that, furthermore, no one does that at Phil’s and the Grinspoon show. It took a while, But security eventually turned up, and with the help of Phil, the D!@k H3@d was removed, and the show continued on.

Let’s get started

To start the set, Phil, Joe, Pat and Kristian, entered to a huge reception from the crowd. The crowd were there to party, and Grinners amped up the juice for everyone.

The first set of tracks, Unknown Pretenders, DC X 3 and Just Ace, zipped by in a moment. From then on, until the interruption, Phil with his flamboyant stage presence, and super hyper antics, Jo with his smooth Bass, Pat the unassuming Guitar God, And Kristian keeping time, had the crowd in a state of rock Bliss.

The next set of tracks, Got the all-ages crowd pumping even harder, introducing some of the younger members to a taste of classic Australian Rock, dare I say it retro? Nah. Not quite retro yet!

The next batch of tracks had the crowd at the pastor going crazy, Lost Control, Never Say, Nasty and Hard Act to follow. Then Back to the New Detention with, No Reason. Grinspoon mixed the set-up with tracks from early Grinners to the new,  IILYSM from Whatever Whenever.

What’s a Grinners Concert without “Better Of Alone”? The crowd loved every moment and sang along. The next three kept the vibe pumping, Secrets, Ready 1, and then Only One.

Phil then called upon Natalie from the press club to join him on stage for Underground, Natalie and Phil’s Harmonies matched perfectly for an awesome track. 1000 Miles followed.

Old School

Phil brought back some memories of Michael Hutchence with an awe-inspiring rendition of INXS, Don’t Change. Then straight into Chemical Heart where not a single person was not singing at the top of their lungs.

The final track for the night Champion was a great way to finish. But wait hold on, the cannons on the side of the stage hadn’t been used, did that mean….

Yep, There’s always room for one last song an encore performance of More Than You Are. And the cannons fired red confetti everywhere filling the Astor Theatre with red rain!

I’m not the most technical of writers or the most imaginative of writers, there are only so many ways to write a review, and honestly, no matter what review you read, it will never be good enough for the lads from Lismore, They are truly Rock Superstars. They are awesome, they are fun, they know how to please, and most importantly they know how to rock on.

Our Thoughts?

Perfect score 10/10. Clean Crisp and hard as nails, Grinspoon are classic OZ rock and puts on a show no die-hard rocker should miss.
