Hey PopRockers, May 2nd, 2025, was a milestone for West Australian musician Shannon Smith. His much-anticipated debut album, Out of the Shadows, was finally unveiled.
For an album launch, Lyric’s Underground in Maylands proved to be the perfect venue, setting the stage for a night of incredible music.
Before Shannon Smith took centre stage, the crowd was treated to an electrifying performance by Hope River Road. This talented ensemble, made up of accomplished musicians, set the tone for an unforgettable evening.
Led by singer-songwriters Craig Pinkey and Paul White, the group brought rich harmonies and rocking lyrics to life. Backed by Mick Burn on drums, Bob Greaves on bass, and Susan Bluck on keys, their sound was both polished and deeply immersive.
From the first notes, Hope River Road had the audience’s attention, delivering a seamless performance. Their set list was awesome and complemented what was to come really well.
Their set list included:
Hope River Road delivered a dynamic performance from start to finish, proving they could easily have had their very own show. They actually do headline their own shows and are well-known around Perth, so if you get a chance, you should check them out. If you weren’t or not familiar with their music, it is impossible not to tap your feet, dance and get into the mood for a rockin night.
Each song was performed with intensity and passion, captivating both longtime fans and first-time listeners alike. Hope River Road’s synergy was undeniable—every member played their part flawlessly, weaving together melodies that resonated throughout the venue.
The HRR are a bunch of talented musicians who gel well and have a great time on stage. Their performance was a testament to their musical depth, making them a standout act worthy of attention, 10/10 from us.
Following Hope River Roads’s electrifying performance, Shannon Smith made his grand entrance, ready to unveil Out of the Shadows.
From the very first song, the crowd was captivated. Couples danced, people rocked, and the energy in the room was ready to party.
Shannon’s set list took the audience on a journey through his life—his inspirations, relationships, and beliefs. Songs like I’m Gonna Change reflected emotional turning points, while I Do had a unique backstory—it was written just before a wedding ceremony while he was in the shower!
One of the most heartfelt moments of the night came with Shannon Smith’s performance of Light On a Hill. This deeply personal track holds special meaning, as it was written in honour of his late Uncle Rob—the man who inspired Shannon’s journey into music.
Rob played a pivotal role in shaping Shannon’s passion for music. As a child, Shannon wanted to play drums like his Uncle Rob, and his parents supported his dream by purchasing Rob’s own drum kit for him.
Sadly, Rob passed away far sooner than Shannon had expected. His loss was deeply felt, and Shannon poured his emotions into Light On a Hill, crafting a song that serves as both a tribute and a way to keep Rob’s legacy alive. The performance of this track during the album launch was nothing short of moving, resonating with the audience in a profound way.
The raw emotion in Shannon’s voice, combined with the powerful instrumental arrangement, made Light On a Hill a standout moment of the night—a reminder of how music can honour, remember, and celebrate those who shape our lives.

Another touching moment of the night came when Shannon Smith took a moment to acknowledge Phil Richardson, whose unwavering support has been instrumental in bringing Out of the Shadows to life.
Phil was there right from the beginning to present when the first notes of the album were recorded, and standing beside Shannon as the final product was unveiled to the world. His dedication to the project went beyond the studio, proving just how much heart and passion he poured into every step of the process.
What made the night even more special was the fact that Phil and his family had travelled all the way from the UK just to be a part of this unforgettable moment. Their presence made the celebration even more meaningful, turning the album launch into a full-circle event.
The night was not only about celebrating music—it was about recognising the people who make that music possible.
The performance was more than just music—it was a full-scale production. The night began with nine musicians on stage, then grew to eleven with a double bass and string section joining for I’m Gonna Change, I Do, and Light On a Hill.

A couple of songs later, the brass section joined, bringing the total to twelve musicians in a packed space. The result was a rich, immersive big-band experience, reminiscent of the Melbourne Ska Orchestra—but obviously a different genre.

Shannon’s set list featured original tracks from Out of the Shadows, alongside carefully selected covers:
The night was a massive success, as Shannon himself shared:
“It was an absolutely amazing night. Having so much love in the room made it unforgettable!”
“The band was tight, the mood was incredible, and the songs were well received. I couldn’t have asked for a better night.”
We couldn’t agree more—10/10!
