Our first article in albums that changed the world, Union by Toni Childs may not have changed the world as we know it. But it did change the world and the music landscape.
The ’80s was a decade of change, The world was getting smaller, we were becoming aware, with disasters like Chernobyl, Countries in Famine, bad hairstyles and dayglo. For me, I had left school and was embarking on the first steps of life which would define me. Tracks like Don’t walk away, Stop your fussin, and Zimbabwe, and dreamer envoke memories from the best years of our young adult lives.
In the 80’s music diversified, a new sound was looming, that sound world music, with sounds terminating from Africa, African Drums and Harmonies. It’s well documented that Union was born from a period in Tomi Childs Life that we go through eventually. It’s how we go through it, it’s what we take from the lessons, it’s about how we come out on the other side. The album for me has taught me when to speak, and when to listen, and more importantly when to walk away.
We have a number of Toni Child’s songs in our playlist on PopRock Radio, but to truly get the feel for the album, you need to listen from start to finish. Don’t be interrupted by the outside world. Turn it up loud, and drift away in the memories of first love, and the breakups, the makeups, and the realisation, that you made it through.
The album Union may not have changed the world by inciting global movements or rallies, but what it did, bought the sounds of a nation to the world. For me it cements memories and emotions in a place I enjoy going.
