The second act at A Day on the Green Burswood Park was none other than Montaigne, the Australian singer-songwriter known for their distinctive, theatrical voice. Montaigne is celebrated for blending indie pop with art rock influences, creating a sound that captivates listeners. Born Jessica Alyssa Cerro, they chose the stage name Montaigne as a tribute to the French philosopher, reflecting their introspective and thought-provoking approach to music.
Montaigne took the stage almost magically, reminiscent of a marionette coming to life after a few energy drinks. With a pixie-like “Hello,” she immediately captivated the crowd. Don’t let that cheerful greeting fool you—Montaigne’s voice is full of energy and power, engaging audiences from the very first note.
They opened their set with Change, an introspective indie pop anthem. Following this, Montaigne performed I’m a Fantastic Wreck, a whimsical yet deeply personal track that highlights their unique musical style. As someone unfamiliar with Montaigne’s music, I was immediately entranced, so much so that I missed the title of their third song, which I believe was Technicolour.
The energy Montaigne brought to the stage was nothing short of epic. Their stage presence was eclectic yet free-flowing, akin to a marionette with strings pulling them around the stage. One by one, Montaigne’s music symbolically cut the strings that once bound her, a powerful metaphor for their journey from corporate music recording to becoming a self-managed artist.
The momentum continued with Make Me Feel So, followed by Love Might Be Found, both tracks reflecting Montaigne’s growing connection with the crowd. It was clear they had a dedicated following in the audience, who sang along, showing their admiration.
Montaigne’s set maintained its energetic vibe, transitioning into pop and art-pop tunes like Everybody Else and Because I Love You. Each song showcased their genre-blending style and dynamic range, keeping the crowd fully engaged.
As the set neared its end, Montaigne performed Talking Shit, All About the Money, and Ready, closing with a flourish. The entire performance was nearly flawless, aside from a small hiccup where Montaigne mixed up the song order. But true to their professional spirit, sthey handled the situation with humour, proving that even the best can stumble at times. Montaigne’s quick wit and infectious personality saved the moment, and the show went on without a hitch.
Montaigne’s performance at A Day on the Green was nothing short of mesmerizing, highlighting their artistry, powerful voice, and natural charisma. Montaigne’s an artist who continues to break boundaries and captivate audiences with their unique blend of pop and art rock influences.
