Believe it or not, Katy Perry started singing as a church gospel singer. She released her debut solo album in 2001, under the name Katy Hudson, her birth name. Katy later changed her stage name to Perry, using her mother’s maiden name.
Before finding fame Katy was dropped by a number of record labels. Katy finally broke through with her second album, “one of the boys” in 2008.
Katy has released 6 studio albums and appeared in a number of films. Katy is an LGBTQI activist, and voiced criticism of Tony Abbott in 2013. The then Liberal Party Candidate for Prime minister of Australia due to his opposition to gay marriage, famously told Abbott, I love you as a human being, but I can’t give you my vote.
Katy was married to Russell Brand from 2010 to 2012, RB announced in 2011 that they would be divorcing, the strain on the breakdown of their marriage can be seen in Katy Perry: Part of me.
Later in 2012, Katy began a relationship with John Mayer. In 2016, Katy began a relationship with Orlando Bloom, and the couple were engaged in 2019, they have one child.
In Australia two of Katie’s albums have reached number 1, and two have peaked at number 2.
Of all her single releases only 4 singles have reached number 1. I Kissed a girl, Californian Gurls, Roar, and Rise. She has a total of 13 top ten songs in Australia.
In September 2021, Variety paid tribute to and honoured Katy on their “Power of Women” issue, where she discussed her career, motherhood, and philanthropy. As a nominee, she attended the Variety 2021 “Power of Women” dinner. On her 37th birthday the following month, Katy guest-hosted The Ellen DeGeneres Show and starred in a holiday advertisement for Gap Inc. which featured her singing “All You Need Is Love” by The Beatles. A full version of her cover was released on streaming platforms the same day.
It has not all been smooth sailing for Katy, she has been in a feud with Taylor Swift, been accused of plagiarism, and sexual misconduct.
