Our next in the series of women of rock is a true warrior. Patti Smyth, not Patti Smith, or any other Patti. It’s Patty Smyth.
For you who don’t know, Patty is an American singer/songwriter from the US of A. Prior to being a solo artist with hits in the late ’80s and early to Mid ’90s, she was heading up a band called Scandal. Scandal had hits The Warrior and Goodbye to you
Birth name: Patricia Smyth
Born: June 26, 1957
Genres: Rock pop, rock new wave
Occupation(s): Singer-songwriter
Instruments: Vocals piano guitar
Years active: 1981–present
Scandal was formed in New York City in 1981 by guitarist Zack Smith. The other initial members included: bassist Ivan Elias (1950–1995), guitarist Keith Mack, keyboardist Benjy King (1953-2012), drummer Frankie LaRocka (1954-2005) (later replaced by Thommy Price), and singer Patty Smyth. Bon Jovi lead singer Jon Bon Jovi also briefly played the guitar for the band in 1983.
Patti has a great rock voice, and she has the personality to match. For a moment think, If David Lee Roth left Van Halen, and Patti took over the lead vocals would VH be the same. Well, she was invited to take over from DLR when he left, but Patti turned down the offer because she was 8 Months pregnant.
I think it turned out well for both parties, as VH picked up Sammy Hager, and Patti went on with a pretty good solo career.
Pattys most recognisable single would be “Sometimes Love Just Aint Enough”, featuring Don Henley, yes that Don Henley.
Patty released her first solo album in 1987, containing the track “Downtown Train” originally done by Tom Waits, three years later Rod Stewart would make that song a hit of his own.
Patty then released the album, Patty Smyth, in 1992, which spawned “Sometimes love just ain’t enough”, “no mistakes” and “I should be laughing”.
Then in 1994, she penned songs for the films “Junior” and “Armageddon”. For “Look what love has done” for the film Junior, gained her nominations for a Grammy and an Oscar award.
In 1997 she married John McEnroe, the retired tennis player. Prior to John Patty was married to Richard Hell, who is an American singer, songwriter, bass guitarist and writer.
Patty still performs and released her latest album in 2020. And she was one of the hundreds of artists who lost material in the 2008 Universal Fire.
Well folks that’s Patty Smyth, we hope you enjoyed the quick read and watching the videos, as always leave comments below!
