Hey Poprockers, On Thursday night (16th November) Perth Rockers Jebediah were inducted into the WA Music Hall of Fame. 24 hours later they followed it up with a show at the Rechabite in Northbridge. Jebediah showed why they deserve such status as one of Western Australia’s greatest bands if not one of Australia’s.
To start the night, “Unicorn” rocked the stage, followed by another great WA band “The Rhinehearts”. On any night this would have been a great lineup, but throw in Jebediah and the night just goes to another level.
PopRockers I have a question for you, “How do you review a band of the calibre of Jebediah?”. Well, you take someone who has never experienced Jebediah, a new generation. You know it has been 12 years since their last album, so a new generation of fans is about to find out about Jebediah. I took my daughter to introduce her to Rock, Australian Rock.
The rockers have recently dropped two singles “Gum Up The Bearings” and “Rubberman”. Both are from their coming album “OIKS”, landing on April 12th 2024. Make sure you put that date and a reminder in your calendar! In the meantime, you can stream “Gum up The Bearings” and “Rubberman” on YouTube.
The Show at the Rechabite was the final show of the “Gum Up The Bearings” Tour. Jebediah hit the stage at around 10, to huge applause from the crowd.
From the moment Jebediah stepped onto the stage, Kevin Mitchell took control. I honestly do not know how he manages to pump out so many bangers at the top of his lungs for so long. They played for around 90 minutes, with an encore performance that can only be called a mini-second set.
The crowd joined in an impromptu ‘Happy Birthday” for bassist Vanessa Thornton, who looked humbled by the gesture. Chris Daymond rocked the night on guitar, while Brett Mitchell looked like he was having a great time on drums. All up, for four musicians to be able to look so fresh together since 1994 is an awe-inspiring feat. Something other bands can only hope to achieve.
I can only say the show was flawless, with Jebediah playing tracks from across their whole discography kicking off “With Gum Up The Bearings” and including hits “Leaving Home” and “She’s like a Comet” and starting the encore performance with a banger “Fall Down”.
Throughout the night Kevin mentioned a few times how grateful they were to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and thanked the crowd for their support and stressed their gratitude. But it should be us, the crowd, the fans, and the new generation of fans who should be thanking you for bringing us music like it should be, loud, hard, and raw.
We left the venue with ears ringing, and sore necks from headbanging, maybe some self-inflicted concussion, but feeling great nonetheless, I asked my daughter what she thought, and she loved every minute of the show, she revealed she knew some of the songs already, so there you go the next generation of Jebediah fans have arrived!
So the next day, how do I feel? My head is still buzzing, and my ears are ringing, not sure if it’s old age, or from the best show I have seen in ages. I am 100% sure it’s the latter. If you didn’t get to the show, you missed a real treat. So make sure you see them play at “Springloaded 2024” details below.
