This is why we love to hate “Shut up + Dance”. I remember the first time I heard the song on the radio. it was around 2015, but the song was released in 2014. We would rock out to it in the car. On school runs, trips to the shops, and I can tell you I still do.
The song is based on an experience lead singer Nicholas Petricca had at a Los Angeles nightclub.
His girlfriend invited him to dance, inspiring the title.
Nicholas envisioned the song as an anthem for letting go of frustration and having fun.
After wearing out they song, from being on repeat, I sucked it up and bought the album. I streamed more songs like the infectious Anna Sun, a surprise hit of 2011, that I hadn’t heard.
One issue I cant squash was when I first heard the song Shut Up + Dance, I actually thought the band was older than what it was, the whole sound seemed older.
When I watched the Video I was surprised. I even had a walk the moon T-shirt.
So the answer to everyones question who was the girl in the video?
It is Lauren Taft, she stars alongside Nicholas as the “woman of his dreams” that he meets on the dance floor, mouthing the lyrics to the song as they dance together.
Stereogum‘s Chris DeVille said the video is “an excellent sendup” that pointedly embraces its ’80s influences as “a knowing pastiche of side ponytails, neon, and references to early MTV”
Every time they released a new track they didn’t disappoint, more catch tunes, Like one foot, Surrender and Can you handle my love. But at the end of the day Shut Up + Dance was their number one hit.
