Grunge VS Rock

Have you ever wondered what the difference between Grunge and Rock music is?  Here we go head to head grunge vs rock! And we answer that very question! What the hell is the difference? can you pick if we had to put tracks side by side? 

Like in the movie Saw, I want to play a game. I’ve chosen the decade it’s the 90’s, and we are comparing Music.

Let’s just start this by looking and the similarities.

Grunge and Rock use the same Instruments, guitars and drums, and bass guitars.

Whereas other genres like pop, use more synthesised and produced sounds, and use instruments such as keyboards. And music like country music is more acoustic and twangy.

I’m not saying rock bands can’t use keyboards, bands like Van Halen did. And they incorporated the sounds quite successfully.

Rock Music

So what is Rock Music?  Well, Rock music, can be classified as metal, this is true because of the metallic sounds. However metal is a sub-genre of rock, developed in the ’60s and ’70s.

Metal music has different genres, commercial rock, pop-rock, glam rock and heavy rock to name a few.

These are subgenres of rock. The most commercially successful genre of rock is heavy metal.

In this article when referring to rock, we will be including a number of sub-genres, but trying to maintain the commercial value of the genre.

What we are looking for in rock music is intense and powerful sounds, with a bit of distortion and reverb.

Is Radio Head Grunge or Rock?

So what is grunge music? Grunge is a subgenre of rock. Grunge flourished in the late ’80s and ’90s. 

Some would say grunge referred to the bands that came from Seattle during the ’90s but this is untrue as grunge had been building as a sub-genre since the late ’80s. But this hasn’t stopped grunge from being known as the Seattle sound.

You could say grunge was growing from bands like The Cure, with darker themes, and still maintaining a rocky sound. 

Actually, the Cure didn’t find commercial success until they shifted from the darker themes to the more love sounding sounds like Friday I’m in love!

Grunge music has distinctive murky guitar sounds.

Grunge also stemmed the Grunge look fashion that became a huge fad, unkept hair, t-shirts and combat boots.

That was grunge.
